Fly Into Your Backyard

Takeaways

  • Residential airparks make great second home options for private plane owners.
  • These communities are found around the country and offer convenient and secure hangars for private planes.

Did you know?

Park the plane at your second home. A different type of second home that might appeal to private plane owners is a spot at a residential airpark. These fly-in communities are built adjacent to private or public airstrips and allow private plane owners to take off and land right by their home and park the plane in a secure location right on site.

These communities are growing around the United States for a number of reasons. Costs for operating and maintaining a private plane have risen dramatically in the last decade, particularly hanger and facility costs at public airports. Also aviation safety is an ongoing consideration made a little more concrete after the 9/11 tragedy.

A plane parked at a residential airpark is secure and the owner has the peace of mind their plane is stored close to their airpark community neighbors. And because of the cost increases for private plane owners, it can be less expensive to own a home and private hanger at a residential airpark.

A survey by Living With Your Plane, an organization focused on residential airparks found the average fly-in community resident is between 45 and 65 years old with a spouse between 45 and 55. A large percentage don't have kids at home, and a majority earn over $100,000 per year. According to the survey, over half of all residential airpark properties are second homes for the owners.

If you own a private plane it might be worth it to consider a residential airpark. These fly-in communities can be found all around the country and more are being developed all the time. Just imagine, you can fly to your second home and taxi right up to a private hanger next to your second home front door.
